Romance and history
After its world premiere in Cannes, RTL Nederland announces a second season for high-end drama series Máxima ahead of its release on streaming service Videoland.

On 9 April 2024, new series about the queen of the Netherlands celebrated its world premiere as part of the 7th Cannes International Series Festival – a first for a Videoland Original. In the presence of directors Saskia Diesing, Joosje Duk and Ivan López Núñez, writers Marnie Blok and Ilse Ott, actresses Delfina Chaves and Elsie De Brauw and actor Martijn Lakemeier, the first two episodes of the series were shown at the event.

Máxima is a series in which romance meets history. Based on the bestselling book by Marcia Luyten, the six-part series explores the life story of Argentinian-born Dutch Queen Máxima. When the press catches wind of her relationship with the crown prince, heated discussions erupt about her father’s political career in Argentina. Can Máxima stay true to herself without giving up her family?

Following its Dutch premiere on 15 April, Máxima will be available on RTL Nederland’s streaming service Videoland from 20 April. On the same day, the first episode will be broadcast on RTL 4.

A second season

Máxima celebrated its Dutch premiere on 15 April at the Royal Theatre Tuschinski in Amsterdam in the presence of actors, creators and several Dutch celebrities. As part of the event, a second season for the series was announced, with Delfina Chaves and Martijn Lakemeier returning to play the leading roles.

Peter van der Vorst, Director of Content at RTL Nederland, says: “We are extremely proud of the quality of this unique Videoland Original and have therefore already decided to order a second series. In the first series, we see how an Argentinian girl develops into a confident young woman who falls madly in love with a Dutch prince. But the story continues, of course. Máxima marries, becomes a mother and queen – piece by piece, events that are etched in our collective memory and that we will see again in the sequel. These are the great Dutch stories our subscribers want to see on Videoland.”

Produced by Rachel van Bommel of Millstreet Films, in co-production with FBO and Beta Film, Máxima is one of the most expensive series ever made in the Netherlands. The series has already been sold internationally to several regions including Germany, Belgium, Latin America, Croatia, Austria, Israel, Latvia and Slovakia.
