At the 61st Grimme Awards, which will take place on 4 April in Marl, Germany, the RTL+ fiction production Angemessen Angry (Appropriately Angry) will be honoured with two prestigious awards. The superhero dramedy will receive recognition in the ‘Fiction’ category and will also be awarded the Marl Group's audience prize. Additionally, this year's special award from the German Adult Education Association (DVV) will be presented to long-time RTL Aktuell news anchors Ulrike von der Groeben and Peter Kloeppel for their outstanding journalistic contributions.

A superhero dramedy

Produced by Studio Zentral for RTL Deutschland, Angemessen Angry is a five-part series, which originated from the RTL+ young talent competition ‘Storytellers’ in 2022. After winning the competition, which aims to provide a creative platform for emerging talent, Elsa van Damke (creator, screenplay, and director) and Jana Forkel (creator and screenplay) from the HMS Hamburg Media School had the opportunity to realise their project.

Angemessen Angry tells the compelling story of Amelie, played by Marie Bloching, a chambermaid who, after experiencing sexual assault, gains superpowers that enable her to identify and combat sex offenders. The jury praised the series with the following statement: "Angemessen Angry creates the wonderful character of a completely (super)human woman who is entirely appropriately angry and urges us not to simply accept the state of the world.”

The series premiered on RTL+ in November 2024, where all episodes are available to watch.

Exemplifying high-quality journalism

Peter Kloeppel and Ulrike von der Groeben have hosted a total of 4,580 episodes of RTL Aktuell, one of the most watched news programmes in Germany broadcast since 1988. In August 2024, the journalist duo said goodbye to a 32-year career at RTL Deutschland during a special farewell broadcast, looking back on the most memorable moments of their careers.

The German Adult Education Association, this year’s special award sponsor, praised the two journalists with the following statement: Ulrike von der Groeben and Peter Kloeppel have shaped the face of RTL Deutschland's main news programme RTL Aktuell for over three decades and are among the most well-known personalities on German television. Together, they exemplify what high-quality journalism can look like – expertly crafted, serious and always close to the people.”

RTL Group had reason to celebrate at previous Grimme Awards. Last year, UFA’s Sam – Ein Sachse (Sam – A Saxon), the first German original to launch on Disney+, received an award in the ‘Fiction’ category. In 2023, Vox format Zum Schwarzwälder Hirsch, in which 13 promising chefs with Down syndrome learn how to run a restaurant, was honoured with a Grimme Award in the ‘Entertainment’ category, alongside the Audience Award.

For the 61st Grimme Awards, 64 productions have been nominated across the categories of ‘Information & Culture’, ‘Fiction’, ‘Entertainment’ and ‘Children & Youth’, selected from over 700 submissions.
