“I give our data a voice”
In the latest episode of RTL stories – The podcast, Jens Hickmann, Divisional Information Security Officer at RTL Group, talks about AI-powered scams, the human side of cybersecurity and why every employee plays a role in keeping the company safe.

Giving data a voice

Cybersecurity often goes unnoticed – until something goes wrong. For Jens Hickmann, protecting RTL Group's information and systems means anticipating risks, supporting colleagues across the business units and making sure security is considered from the start.

“I give our data a voice when it comes to discussions about how to secure systems or to acquire or implement a new system,” he explains to host Lisa Burke.

Having previously worked in banking and consulting, Jens knows that protecting a media company comes with its own challenges. In an industry built around creating and sharing information, finding the right balance between security and business needs is particularly important.

When you can't trust the voice on the phone

Imagine receiving an urgent voice message from your manager asking you to authorise a bank transfer. It sounds exactly like them. But is it really?

As AI makes it easier to imitate voices and create convincing fake identities, identifying cyberattacks is becoming increasingly difficult. Jens explains how cybercriminals use urgency, confidentiality and even flattery to manipulate their targets.

“Trust the established processes in the organisation,” he advises.

Our colleagues: the first line of defence

“I like to see our colleagues as the first defence force,” says Jens. While technology plays an essential role in preventing attacks, our everyday decisions can make just as much of a difference.

And even cybersecurity experts aren't immune to mistakes. Jens shares how he once fell for a simulated phishing email that appeared to come from a former colleague.

“We are all humans and mistakes happen,” he says. What matters most is reporting incidents quickly, learning from them and creating a culture where colleagues feel comfortable speaking up.
