Change through community: One year of Greenmantle
“There is something we’re fighting for! That’s where our heartbeat is”: Meet Greenmantle, the employee-led group spearheading sustainability at Fremantle US.

One year on from its launch, Greenmantle has established itself as a passionate,  employee-led initiative at Fremantle US – bringing people together around a shared ambition: making sustainability part of everyday life

At its core, Greenmantle is about community. Made up of seven dedicated people, the group was created to empower colleagues to make mindful, sustainable decisions – at work and beyond. Rather than positioning sustainability as an obligation, the focus is on making it accessible, engaging and relevant.

As Becky Hartung, Senior Coordinator US Sales and Distribution, Fremantle US, and Founding Member of Greenmantle puts it: “We didn’t want this to feel like a chore – we wanted to invite people into the conversation and show that building sustainable communities is what really matters.”

That mindset shapes everything Greenmantle does: opening up dialogue, sparking curiosity and encouraging small, meaningful changes that ripple outwards. “You never know what someone will take from a conversation at work and carry into their life at home,” says Joe Goldberg, Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs at Fremantle US. “That’s where the real impact happens.”

🔹 A holistic approach to sustainability

For Greenmantle, sustainability goes beyond ‘just’ environmental action – it’s deeply interconnected with social justice, access and lived realities

“For us, sustainability is holistic,” says Becky. “Social justice is a key part of driving real, meaningful climate change.”

“If we want people to change their behaviour, we also have to think about access, safety and the realities people face in their daily lives.”

This means recognising that behaviour change is not always straightforward. Practical barriers – from cost to convenience – can often stand in the way. “In Los Angeles, people in under resourced communities often don't feel safe biking. And how do we encourage anyone to take public transit or bike if they don't feel safe?” asks Becky.

“If we want people to change their behaviour, we also have to think about access, safety and the realities people face in their daily lives.”

“In Los Angeles, those most at risk for climate change are black and brown communities – yet who doesn’t have a seat at the table? Black and brown people. As an LA office, these are the conversations we need to be having,” explains Becky.

During ‘The Story of Los Angeles: Climate Justice from Our Streets to Our Screens’, a panel hosted in collaboration with Cultrix, Greemantle highlighted the intersection of climate and social justice through perspectives from organisations such as Hip Hop Caucus and Biking While Black.

By linking sustainability to everyday decisions and business practices, the group aims to shift mindsets over time – with an approach grounded in empathy, awareness and practical action. “We want to connect the dots and help show people how this relates to their work… so that when it comes to decision-making, there is that voice in their head that asks: ‘couldn’t we do this more cheaply and sustainably?’,” explains Joe.

🔹 A year of Greenmantle – building momentum

Since launching on Earth Day 2025, Greenmantle has built strong momentum through initiatives designed to engage, inform and inspire. Key milestones include:

  • Free Little Library – encouraging a culture of sharing and showing that sustainability can be simple and community-driven

  • Trees of LA walk – inviting colleagues to explore their urban environment and understand the role of trees in building resilient, liveable cities

Events like the Stories That Move Us panel (above) brought together voices from across entertainment and journalism – including Ed Begley Jr, Adam Conover, Bill Wolkoff and Olga Lexell (right) – to explore how storytelling can shape environmental awareness

“By opening up these conversations,” explains Becky, “We’re helping creatives bring a different awareness into the stories they tell.”

Beyond the office, volunteering remains a key pillar. From supporting TreePeople and participating in CicLAvia – Los Angeles’ city-wide initiative promoting car-free streets – to working with Habitat for Humanity in 2026 to help rebuild homes in Altadena following the Eaton wildfires, Greenmantle continues to turn ideas into tangible action.

“My favourite Greenmantle event,” says Alex Tobin, Greenmantle member and Sustainability & Operations Manager at Fremantle North America, “was our Baywatch beach-clean up, where we picked up over 48 pounds of from Venice Beach.”

“I’m also really excited for our ‘buy nothing’ event, where we bring in items that we no longer need to see if any colleagues can get any use out of them – otherwise, we donate the rest to local organisations.”

“I think people get overwhelmed,” said Baywatch star David Chokachi at Greenmantle’s Venice Beach clean-up. “They’re like, ‘Well, that’s one piece of trash. What difference does that make?’ But if I pick it up, that’s one less piece of trash… It’s a ripple effect.”

🔹 What’s next?

As Greenmantle enters its second year, the focus is clear: steady, meaningful progress. “My hope for the future is for more North American colleagues to join our chapter – and to see more chapters open up globally!” says Alex.

It can feel like an uphill battle, especially in a place like LA – so we focus on what’s actually possible and where we can make a difference,” says Becky. “We can’t change federal law, but we can advocate for things in our office that improve our wellbeing.”

“People are worried about the industry, their jobs, and we want to help offer that solice: there is something we're fighting for here! That's what our heartbeat is.”

Ultimately, success is not defined by a single initiative, but by a shift in mindset – where sustainability becomes second nature and people feel empowered, not overwhelmed. One year in, that shift is already underway.

💚 A massive, heartfelt thanks to Becky, Alex, and our colleagues at Greenmantle for sharing their work with us!
