Meeting in Brussels
Enex launched its News Exchange Platform and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the European Parliament at the 2024 Enex Editorial Coordinator Conference in Brussels.

Enex’s latest Editorial Coordinator Conference took place on Thursday 22 and Friday 23 February 2024 at the European Parliament in Brussels. This annual meeting, which previously took place in Sofia and Cologne, brings together Enex members from all over the world to receive updates and build personal relationships. Participants included 59 Enex members and the European Union (EU) Media Service team.

The two-day programme included a presentation on the upcoming European Parliament elections and the different reporting options available, a press conference on the 100-day countdown to the elections, a discussion on other 2024 elections around the world, a presentation on the different opportunities for collaboration with AI, and a tour of the Parliament.

Official launch of the NEP

The meeting was the perfect opportunity to officially launch Enex’s News Exchange Platform (NEP) as part of the Create and Exchange project’s technology stream. Developed by an EU-funded consortium together with Broadcasting Center Europe (BCE), the NEP is a content-sharing platform for news partners that uses a range of AI technologies.

Šime Jurlina, Head of Finance and Operations at Enex, says : ”We are very proud to launch the NEP, which has been developed by RTL Group in synergy with our technology provider BCE and co-financed by the EU. The platform represents the latest step in the modernisation of European and global news streaming, search and translation. We are looking forward to a new phase of development where the focus will shift from using AI as a tool to understanding its role in enhancing the value and accessibility of content. We believe that AI holds huge potential for enriching the consumer experience as well as the prospect of creating new revenue streams.”

Signing a Memorandum of Understanding

Ahead of the European elections on 6-9 June, Enex also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the European Parliament. The agreement, which aims to increase cooperation of audiovisual services between the two organisations, will help Enex and its partners secure the possibility of broad coverage for the upcoming elections. The memorandum was signed by Othmar Karas, Vice-President of the European Parliament, Jaume Duch Guillot, Director-General for Communication and Spokesperson of the European Parliament, and Adrian Wells, Managing Director of Enex.

Othmar Karas, Vice-President of the European Parliament, said: “These European elections come at a critical time for the world. The crises of the past few years, from Covid-19, to the war in Ukraine and the increased cost of living, among others, have raised citizens’ awareness and expectations of the impact of the European Union. It is more important than ever that citizens have access to reliable information, so that they can make informed decisions about their future, and fully engage with their democratic rights. As research shows that most European citizens get their news from television, our continued partnership with Enex, underlined by this Memorandum of Understanding, helps us in the pursuit of this goal.”
