On 13 February 2023, alongside the news that Nicolas de Tavernost will step down from his position as Chairman of the Executive Board, Groupe M6 published its full-year results for 2023.
Consolidated revenue was down 3.0 per cent year-on-year to €1,315.6 million (2022: €1,356.9 million). Advertising revenue decreased by 1.5 per cent to €1,067.0 million (2022: €1,083.6 million), with TV advertising revenue down 2.2 per cent year-on-year in line with the market trend. Non-advertising revenue decreased by 9.0 per cent to €248.6 million (2022: €273.3 million) – primarily due to the deconsolidation of Best of TV, M6 Digital Services’ online media and services division, and social media agency Ctzar.
With these sales, Groupe M6 continued to streamline its portfolio – resulting in capital gains of €24.6 million. Consolidated profit from recurring operations (EBITA) dropped by 10.6 per cent to €300.7 million (2022: €336.2 million), representing an operating margin of 22.9 per cent.
TV programming costs remained stable at €502.6 million (2022: €504.9 million), enabling Groupe M6 to continue broadcasting major sports events such as the Women’s World Cup and Rugby World Cup, while increasing exclusive content on streaming service 6play.
Groupe M6’s free-to-air TV channels – M6, W9, 6ter and Gulli – achieved the greatest year-on-year growth in the 25-49 key commercial target group, with an average audience share of 20.5 per cent (up 0.2 percentage points from 2022). On the flagship channel M6, popular entertainment shows such as L’Amour est dans le Pré (Farmer Wants a Wife), long-standing news programmes such as Capital and Zone Interdite and new brands such as Les Traîtres (The Traitors) performed particularly well.
6play broke records in 2023. With a third of its users under 35 years old, the streaming service has the youngest audience on the market and is leading in terms of viewing time per user in the under-35 group – confirming its popularity among young people. Looking ahead, Groupe M6 plans to launch a new platform for 6play, driven by the expertise of Bedrock – a streaming technology company and joint venture between Groupe M6 and RTL Group. Groupe M6 will invest up to €100 million in this platform, aiming to double its streaming revenue and the number of hours viewed by 2028.
With its three radio stations – RTL Radio France, Fun Radio and RTL 2 – Groupe M6 maintained its position as France’s leading commercial radio group, and was additionally ranked the country’s leading commercial podcast producer.
Net profit for the period was €237.1 million – a 42.9 per cent increase from the previous year (2022: €165.9 million).
