The Klatt family is back – and once again, trouble is never far away. Following the success of its first season, the German-language dark comedy Where’s Wanda?, produced by Fremantle’s UFA Fiction, returns for a second season on Apple TV on 21 October 2026. The eight-part season will launch with its first episode, followed by a new episode every Wednesday until 9 December.
Starring Heike Makatsch, Axel Stein and Lea Drinda, the new season follows the Klatts as they try to prove their daughter's innocence after she becomes a murder suspect. Alongside familiar faces, the cast welcomes several new additions, including Alexandra Maria Lara and Sam Riley. We spoke to Debora Rosenthal, Producer at UFA Fiction, about what viewers can expect, the series’ international success and what she’s working on next.
1. After finally being reunited with their missing daughter, the Klatt family finds itself caught up in another mystery. What can viewers expect from the second season of Where’s Wanda??
I think anyone who enjoyed the first season will have just as much fun with the second.
The Klatts finally have their daughter back, but their happiness won't last very long. Suddenly, Wanda finds herself suspected of murder, and her parents once again do everything they can to protect her. In the process, they get pulled deeper and deeper into a world they'd much rather stay out of. And knowing the Klatts, their very own ways of dealing with things don't necessarily make the situation any easier.
It was important to us to keep developing the characters and give them even more emotional depth. I think we’ve found a really nice balance in season two between suspense, some pretty crazy moments and scenes that genuinely move you.
2. The new season brings together familiar faces, including Heike Makatsch and Axel Stein, alongside exciting additions such as Alexandra Maria Lara and Sam Riley. What makes this ensemble so special?
We’re incredibly lucky to work with such a wonderful cast. Heike and Axel are a fantastic duo as Carlotta and Dedo because they're equally brilliant at both the comedic and emotional moments. They also create such a great atmosphere on set, because they really see themselves not just as the leads, but also as the hosts of our show.
With Alexandra Maria Lara and Sam Riley, we've gained two fantastic actors and genuinely lovely people who bring a whole new dynamic to the story. They were absolute favourites on set, simply because they're both so incredibly charming and deliver such brilliant performances. They’re a real joy to work with.
What I particularly love about our cast is how much fun everyone has throwing themselves into these sometimes rather eccentric characters and situations. You can see that with Devid Striesow as Rüdiger, for example, whose look and character have been such great fun for us. And Lea Drinda, as Wanda, really takes us on an emotional journey in season two, bringing so much depth to her pain, grief and anger.
3. The first season of Where’s Wanda? received international acclaim. What do you think makes this distinctly German series resonate with audiences around the world?
At its heart, Where’s Wanda? is about something people all over the world can relate to: a family trying to stick together, even when everything around them is falling apart. It also raises the question of just how far you'd go to protect the people you love. The Klatts don't always make the smartest decisions, and sometimes you just want to give them a good shake, but somehow you can still understand why they do what they do.
Then there's this mix of comedy, crime and drama, where you're sometimes not quite sure whether to laugh or be on the edge of your seat. And I think that's a big part of what makes the show so special.
4. Where’s Wanda? is returning for a second season on Apple TV. What does this continued collaboration mean for UFA Fiction, and what opportunities does it open up for German productions internationally?
We were obviously thrilled to get the chance to continue telling the Klatts' story together with Apple TV. Especially at a time when things aren't exactly easy for the German film and television industry, that's something we certainly don't take for granted. It's wonderful to have a partner who believes in the show and gives us the opportunity to make it on this scale.
I think we have an incredible amount of creative talent in Germany, both in front of and behind the camera. Our two directors, Tobi Baumann and Christian Ditter, are great examples of that. Their ideas and individual creative styles have played a huge part in making Where's Wanda? the show it is today.
And there are so many more stories coming out of Germany that have the potential to connect with audiences internationally. I'd love to see us tell many more of them in the future and have the opportunities and support to make that happen. I also love seeing that a story doesn't have to lose its local identity to connect with an international audience.
5. Looking beyond Where’s Wanda?, what other projects are you currently working on – and what are you most excited about?
I'm currently working with our Managing Director and Executive Producer Nataly Kudiabor and our producer Arne Packschies, both of whom I also worked with on Where's Wanda?, on a new dark comedy thriller series that we’re developing for another streaming platform. It's written and directed by Benjamin Gutsche, who most recently created the Netflix series Cassandra, among other projects.
I’m really excited about this show because we get to play with different genres again, and the story has quite a few surprises in store. And of course, it’s also lovely to keep working with people you've already been through quite a lot with and know you can always rely on.
